Five-yr-old wins battle with drug-resistant tuberculosis

Seven-year-old Sultan Liyas Shaikh from Juhapura is the first child under 10 who has recovered completely from second-line of multidrug resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB) of spine in Gujarat.
Sultan has recovered completely, living like children his age: going to school, paying football with his friends and having food of his choice after two years of treatment. But it was different two years ago when at five he weighed only 10 kg.
For days he could not sleep at night due to pain in spine which ultimately forced his parents to take him to Civil Hospital where he got operated upon for spine deformation, paralysis of nerves and bone decay. As spine is joined with head, in case of spine TB, there are chances of it spreading to the brain which can become riskier, said Dr Tushar Patel, consultant pulmonologist at Narayana multispeciality hospital. “TB can affect any part of the body except hair and nail as they don't have any living cell,“ he said.
“After operation, I sent samples for culture testing. He was diagnosed with MDR-TB of spine. Extra-pulmo nary TB, especially of spine, is tough to diagnose early. And due to the TB, his nerve and bone had got affected,“ said Dr Rajesh Solanki, head of TB department at Civil Hospital.
Dr M M Prabhakar, spine surgeon and medical superintendent of Civil Hospital who operated upon him, placed steel plates to support the spine which was earlier deformed and bent.MDR-TB is a condition when drugs become ineffective against first line tuberculosis bacteria and medication has to be continued for 24 months.
“In 23 per cent of the cases, people discontinue the treatment considering the long tenure of medication though it is essential to complete the tenure,“ added Dr Solanki.
